Let's Speak Up about Drowsy Driving (2008-11-03)

Drivers who get behind the wheel on too little sleep nearly double the chances that they will get into an accident, according to Dr. Donald Redelmeier, a University of Toronto professor who studies the issue. An appeal is currently before Ontario courts in the case of the death of Erica Cadieux. Ms Cadieux was pushing her baby in a stroller on a sidewalk in Ottawa two years ago when a woman hit and killed her. The woman was aquitted despite admiting right after it happened that she shouldn't have been driving due to the fact that she was too tired. The problem is quantifying sleep impairment, say experts. Ms. Cadieux's death should not be in vain, however. As her husband, Carlo Spadafora, works to have drowsy driving recognized as an impairment similar to drunk driving, we should all keep our own driving in check and begin at least to raise this issue, the consequences of which are way out of proportion to how little it is recognized and discussed.
